Retro seaside resort Great Yarmouth is well-and-truly in the midst of a renaissance. Earlier this year Time Out revealed its list of the best seaside towns in the UK to visit in 2026. Coming in at number 16 was the Norfolk town, known for its long, sandy beach, amusement park and old-school pier.

Why is now a good time to visit Great Yarmouth? Well, this year the town’s boardwalk was named Britain’s Pier of the Year thanks to a recent 2.2 million revamp. Britannia Pier beat 62 other seaside promenades for the title – following its massive renovation it has new food stalls, an improved amusement arcade (now triple its former size) and a generally spruced-up appearance.

Yarmo is also home to Britain’s only scenic roller coaster. Found at Pleasure Beach, the scenic railway is the only surviving ride of its kind in the UK. Built in 1928, Great Yarmouth’s Roller Coaster began life in Paris before being shipped to Norfolk and opening to the public in 1932. The attraction is so unique that it’s the only one of its kind to be controlled manually by a seated operator using a lever. Isn’t that quaint?

And that’s not all, this year it was revealed that Great Yarmouth is going to undergo a ‘once-in-a-generation’ renovation that will completely transform its North Quay, and see multiple historic landmarks restored to their former glory. The project isn’t expected to be completed until 2030, but we suggest getting your visit in now, before the hordes come running.
