Ask any Brit to name two UK icons, the chances are Greggs and the pub will be top of the list (apologies to the Beckhams). Which makes it surprising that the two have never joined forces - until now. Enter The Golden Flake Tavern, Greggs’ first-ever UK pub.
Opening this Saturday inside Fenwick’s flagship Newcastle store, the five-month pop-up (running until February 15) promises all the pastry-fuelled pints you could dream of. It’ll be open daily from 11am to 7pm, so there's plenty of time to get your fix.
On the menu? Greggs classics, reimagined. Fenwick’s executive head chef Mark Reid has curated 15 pub-ready takes, including chicken bake parmo drenched in cheddar sauce, sausage roll and mash and even a steak bake grill with chunky chips.
Sundays are reserved for the pièce de résistance: a build-your-own Greggs carvery where the roast centrepiece is either steak bake, chicken bake or cheese and onion bake. Trimmings that you can pile as high as your heart’s content include velvety cauliflower cheese and golden homemade roast potatoes.

And that’s not all - even the drinks at The Golden Flake Tavern are unique. Alongside a Greggs-inspired cocktail menu, the pub will be pouring two exclusive Greggs-inspired beers on draft: The Pink Jammie Pale Ale and the Gosforth 1939 Stouttie Lager. Add in a weekly Tuesday quiz night (£5 for teams of up to six) and you’ve got yourself the ultimate Greggs-meets-local-boozer experience.
It is not the first time Greggs has branched out beyond baking. Last year, it was behind a pop-up champagne bar and in 2023, it launched its first fine dining bistro. We're sure The Golden Flake Tavern will be just as much of a success.
