Espresso or cortado, flat white or skinny cap. Whatever your go-to order, if there’s one thing that all coffee connoisseurs can agree on: not every cup of joe is made equal. Sure, the big chain down the road or a cup of instant from the office cupboard will do when you’re in a rush, but there’s something about watching your local barista perfect their latte art swan that just hits different.

It’s for that precise reason that Capital on Tap has searched out independent coffee shops across these British and Northern Irish Isles to see which 10 serve the best java. It scored indie cafés on a combination of Google review ratings, number of reviews, average monthly Google searches and Instagram followers, whittling a list of 100 down to the top 10.

The results are in, and it turns out that all of the winners happen to be outside the capital. Brew better, London.

Neighbourhood Cafe in Belfast scooped the top spot. Based on Donegall Street in the NI capital’s Cathedral Quarter, it serves up batch and hand brew coffee alongside the classics, and even has a nut butter iced latte on the menu.

Silver went to Colonna & Small’s, which has a café in Bath and a roastery in Bristol and has been run by husband-and-wife team Maxwell and Lesley Colonna-Dashwood since 2009. The duo have even co-authored published scientific papers on coffee, so they really know their stuff.

Completing the podium entries was another Belfast coffeehouse, located just around the corner from the winner. Established Coffee doubles as a coffee shop where you can take home bags of the good stuff grown all around the world.
