This iconic Glasgow boozer is the third-best pub in the UK – and the top place to drink in Scotland

Time Out recently published our guide to the greatest pubs in the UK right now, compiled with the help of our nationwide network of boozing experts. The list’s top two spots were awarded to Manchester’s Peveril of the Peak and Whitstable’s Old Neptune, but every featured drinking hole is worth a visit – especially the bronze medallist, The Doublet in Glasgow.

A West End institution since the 1960s (and pretty much unchanged since then), the Doublet’s uncial lettering and wood-panelled, stony exterior make it one of Glasgow’s most distinctive-looking pubs. We love the place for its Scottish-brewed ale and whisky selection, live music and comedy lounge and, most of all, its cheery atmosphere.

As we say in our write-up: ‘If you don’t spend the evening chatting to extraordinarily friendly strangers, you’re doing the Doublet wrong.’

The Doublet is far from the only Glaswegian pub on this year’s list. In fact, Scotland’s biggest city featured more acclaimed boozers than anywhere else with three inclusions: the Doublet, the Laurieston Bar (in eighth) and Rose Reilly (at 17). Elsewhere in Scotland, two Edinburgh pubs made the cut. The Brass Monkey’s original Drummond Street location and The Dagda Bar repped Auld Reekie in this year’s guide.
