This weekend basically the entire world will be watching as Britain officially gets a brand-new King. Planning for the big day, aka Operation Golden Orb, has been under way for months and will finally come together into one big ceremonious weekend. A timetable has been finalised, the coronation concert line-up has been locked in and the procession route has been revealed.

But as we watch Charles and Camilla travel in a golden coach and deploy gigantic security measures, one has to wonder: how the hell are they paying for all of this?! Here’s everything we know.

How much will the coronation cost?

The official budget of the event has not been made public but there’s been plenty of speculation. Some have said it’s likely to be between £100 million and £150 million.

The Daily Mirror put the figure even higher, claiming that £150 million in security costs will bring the total price up to £250 million.

The palace is set to release its annual financial report in June. This is expected to include information around the cost of the Corrie Naish but an exact figure isn’t guaranteed.

Who is paying for the coronation?

The money for the event is being coughed up by the government because it is classified as a state event. This ultimately means that the taxpayer is footing the bill.

As a result, many are pushing for clarity on the official figure, particularly in the midst of ongoing strike action and a cost of living crisis.

How much is King Charles worth?

According to a recent investigation by The Guardian, Charles’s wealth soared to £1.81 billion following the Queen’s death.

The eye-watering fortune apparently derives from assets including a private car collection worth an estimated £6.3 million, private property worth £330 million and a stash of bling worth £533 million.

However, in response to the research a spokesperson for HRH said: ‘While we do not comment on private finances, your figures are a highly creative mix of speculation, assumption and inaccuracy.’

How much did the Queen’s funeral cost?

Again, an official cost was not released but based on the cost of previous royal funerals (the Queen Mother’s funeral in 2002 reportedly cost around £5.4 million) reports speculate that it could have been up to £10 million.
