Winter can be a dangerous time to be on the road. Whether it’s icy bends, pitch-black evenings or torrential showers, there are a lot of things that drivers have to be wary of this time of year.

Thanks to steep slopes, narrow country passages and tight bends, the UK has its fair share of hazardous routes, made even more risky in the cold weather. In fact, one notoriously tricky road in England has just been named one of the most treacherous in the entire world.

StressFreeCarRental.com named the A57 Snake Pass in the Peak District as the planet’s third most dangerous place to drive. The 26-mile stretch is part of the shortest route from Manchester to Sheffield and starts in Glossop, driving through the Pennines.

Snake Pass is incredibly scenic but with that comes a lot of hazards like blind summits and hairpin bends. Over the winter months, heavy snow and landslides can force it to close and it has been described as a ‘hotspot for fatal accidents’. Between 2014 and 2018 there were 137 incidents on Snake Pass.

Another UK route also made the list. With lots of sharps twists and the steepest ascent of any other UK road (2,054 feet) Bealach na Ba road in Scotland came in at number five. Stay safe out there!
