Liverpool’s John Lennon airport has had a bit of a crazy week. It was announced on Tuesday that you can now catch a flight to Bacău, Romania, thanks to the launch of services by Dan Air. However, now we’ve also got some not-so-good news.

Popular German airline Lufthansa, which only began its flights from Liverpool to Frankfurt in May 2022, has made the decision to scrap the service. It currently flies from 11 different UK airports, but from February, Liverpool John Lennon Airport won’t be one of them.

In summer 2023, the airline actually upped its flights to Frankfurt, increasing to six per week from May. So, why the decision to cancel?

Well, according to the Liverpool Echo, it’s because of ‘a lack of Lufthansa plane availability’. A spokesperson for the airline said that it’s facing unscheduled maintenance work on some of its fleet, so there are less planes available than planned. It’s all a bit up in the air.

Lufthansa have said they’ll notify customers that are affected by the schedule change, but there have been some complaints by customers online

‘Is this a joke by @lufthansa? They should reduce the amount of flights to/from Manchester in order to allow the flights from Liverpool Airport to operate!’ said one X (Twitter) user, according to the Sun

Could Lufthansa return to Liverpool in the future? Who knows. If the airline secures more planes, it could be a possibility, but that’s not been confirmed.
