The Detroit Police Department threw down the gauntlet this week, and it had nothing to do with crime or policing strategy. This gauntlet-throwing was all about fly, funky, soul-inspiring dancing.

On Monday, the Motor City's Finest published the video above showing the department's entire staff grooving out in the latest "Running Man Challenge." It's become just the latest such video to go viral within the last month.

The city's police chief James Craig challenged the Cincinnati, Chicago and Philadelphia police departments to top their moves—which is no small task considering how much awesomeness is packed into the four-minute spot (they do a mic drop with a goddamn doughnut at the end).

If you're not a hip young human on the internet, here's the background: The Running Man Challenge took off online last month after sports teams across the country started making pretty hilarious videos of their players dancing to Ghost Town DJ's "My Boo" with a strange choreography that resembles, well, a person running. The trend was initially started by a couple of high school kids, and while it's no "Harlem Shake," it's certainly made the internet a slightly more funny place.

It's unclear whether or not the other three city's police departments will respond with a video of their own, but lord knows they need it. The Facebook pages for the ChicagoPhiladelphia and Cincinnati police departments are so boring it's hard to look at them for more than 20 consecutive seconds. (Come on guys, no social media strategy? What are you doing, out keeping the streets safe or something?) But really, we just want to see more officers in uniform dance their pants off.
