Eight takeaways from this year’s Emmy nominations

The nominations for the 68th Emmy Awards were released last night, and we have some thoughts.

A slew of the best TV shows of 2016 (so far) made the list, but there were also snubs, surprises and even more drama about Jon Snow’s death. Find out what you need to binge watch before the awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, air on September 18, and see the full list of nominees below.

1. We called ‘em.

We told you to watch Making a Murderer back before it blew up on Twitter and got a nomination for Documentary or Nonfiction Series, chatted with Ellie Kemper before the second season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (which was even better than the first) and her Lead Actress nom, and named 22-time nominee The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story the best TV show of the year so far. Told ya so.

2. It was a great year for beverages.

Sorry, but we can’t stop talking about The People v. O.J. Simpson—we love it so much, juice jokes and all. Also recognized by the Emmys is Beyoncé’s HBO special Lemonade, with four nominations including Variety Special. All hail Queen Bey.

3. A Stark got snubbed.

Game of Thrones had the most Emmy nominations of any show with 23, and stars Maisie Williams and Kit Harington both got their very first nominations—even though Mr. Jon Snow seems to be getting more recognition for being not dead than for acting skills. However, their Stark sibling Sansa, played by a better-than-ever Sophie Turner, was left out. Shame.

4. Vote for Larry David as Bernie Sanders.

Larry David’s multiple appearances on Saturday Night Live made us even more excited for the return of Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2017, and he scored a nomination for hosting the show in February.

5. Netflix and Emmys.

This is the very first year that Netflix beat broadcast networks in noms. As it gets more and more popular, hang on to your password for dear life.

6. Colbert out, Corden in.

Recent Tonys host James Corden got a nomination for best variety talk series for The Late Late Show—probably all thanks to Carpool Karaoke, if we’re being honest. Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert failed to get recognition for his new Late Show after 10 consecutive nominations The Colbert Report. Ouch.

7. Where the girls at?

Um, Emmys? Where’s our spirit animal Rachel Bloom from the underrated and hilarious Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? What about the fifth season of Girls, which brought it back to season-one goodness? And what about the Litchfield ladies of Orange Is the New Black (which got one measly nomination for casting)?

8. A Kardashian got an Emmy nod.

Fine, it was really David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian in The People v. O.J. Simpson, playing the participant in the trial with a palpable confliction. Who knew Ross had it in him?
