Boxing great Muhammad Ali has died in Scottsdale, Arizona, age 74.

The former heavyweight champion, born Cassius Clay, was hospitalized on Thursday for a respiratory issue; it was reported that friends and family had been by his side since he was admitted.

While Ali's spokesperson had initially said the hospital stay was expected to be short, it was soon reported that his condition had deteriorated.

Ali's last formal public appearance was for the Sports Illustrated Tribute to Muhammad Ali at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, where he lives.

The boxer was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1984, and has lived with the disease and made appearances—including famously lighting the torch at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games—in the three decades since.
