Do Netflix preferences across state lines reflect regional differences? That's the question that HighSpeedInternet.com attempts to answer by creating this map of the most streamed shows on Netflix in each American state.
Given that the streaming service notoriously never releases data and ratings, High Speed Internet determined each state's fan favorite by taking the 75 most talked about shows currently on Netflix, cross referencing them with Google Trends data and then determining "which series was most likely to be streamed on devices near you."
Interestingly enough, according to the site, trends based on "stereotypes shape regional streaming favorites." Southerners mostly seem to embrace dramas like Bloodline and Scandal. The west, on the other hand, appears to be most attracted to "the criminal element [of shows] like Orange is the New Black and Narcos." Those in the Pacific Coast are partial to "quirky comedies and romances like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Portlandia" while New Englanders are drawn to the strong female protagonists of Nurse Jackie, New Girl, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Shameless.
Some other interesting highlights from the collected data:
- Conservative states (as identified by Gallup in this study) lean towards "extreme" shows, either R-rated ones like Scandal or PG ones like Gilmore Girls and Stranger Things.
- States with a relatively high incarceration rate are drawn to Orange is the New Black, a show about prison.
- The setting of a show doesn't necessarily affect its popularity in a state as much as the area's demographics do.
