Gender equality could be coming to your pedestrian crossing if the world follows in the glowing green footsteps of a council in Melbourne, Australia.

The City of Yarra, which overseas governance of a slice of the Victorian capital, announced on International Women's Day that it will replace the green male walking signal at a major Melbourne intersection with the silhouette of Mary Rogers.

Rogers—whose silhouette looks wonderfully Mary Poppins—was the state of Victoria's first female councillor, elected in 1920. She was also a a bit of a feminist badass, leading the way on a number of causes, including pushing for the state's first health care services for mothers and children.

According to a report from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the new signal came about thanks to the efforts of female councillors who were looking to acknowledge Rogers' contribution.

The new signal will be operational from May and stay glowing for at least 12 months.

We say make it permanent. And American cities could follow suit.

Men: want to cross the road? Better get in formation.
