Prices for domestic getaways are down 11% since last month

Ready for a vacation? Always. Here's a good reason to book your next getaway, stat: Airfare is the cheapest it will be, potentially for the entire year. 

According to Hopper's 2024 Travel Outlook, data shows that domestic airfare is down by 11% since last month, with prices expected to increase as soon as February. Prices aren't expect to drop again until April, when they should be down 1% after March's 7% increase. That is to say, now's the time to explore or re-visit a new place.

Hopper is expecting that the average cost of airfare may be below pre-pandemic levels, and while you can't time travel, you can make up for lost time by booking a getaway. 

Wondering where to go? Hopper's data shows that some of the most popular domestic travel destinations aren't your typical vacation spots. Spokane, Portland, Bangor and Fairbanks are all trending as searches, likely for their proximity to National Parks. If you really want to save, plan your drip during one of 2024's free National Park entry days, which kick off on Monday, January 15 , for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Sunseekers can also consider visiting Orange County, Valparaiso and Hilton Head Island, are trending in Hopper's searches. Rental car prices are down 4% compared to this time last year, so all signs are pointing to vacation savings. 

Need even more motivation to take some time off the first month of the year? 83% of Hopper travelers expect to be going on vacation at least once in 2024. Avoid FOMO, book a trip.
