American Express Travel recently released its 2023 Global Travel Trends Report, which divulges travel trends and behaviors worldwide. Among the report findings were four standout types of travel on the rise—off the beaten path, “set-jetting,” delicious destinations, and wellness getaways.

Off the Beaten Path

Of the 3,000 travelers surveyed, 89 percent of respondents expressed a desire to visit destinations they’ve never been to before, as well as discover lesser-known locations. Similarly, a large majority of respondents also wanted to travel to a place where they can truly immerse themselves in the local culture.

“Set-Jetting”

No, we don’t mean jet-setting. This new travel trend refers to those who take their travel inspo from movies, TV shows, and other pop culture references. (I mean, where are the stats on how many people flocked to Italy after season 2 of The White Lotus?) While 64 percent of those surveyed stated that they have been inspired to visit a destination after seeing it featured in either a TV series, news source, or movie, that percentage increases to a whopping 70 percent when polling Gen-Z and Millennial respondents.

Delicious Destinations

Everyone knows one of the best ways to get a feel for the culture of a destination is through its gastronomy. The findings from the Global Travel Trends Report reflect that sentiment—81 percent of those surveyed claimed that trying local foods and cuisines is the highlight of their trip, while 79 percent enjoy trying food options they’ve never tried before.

Wellness Wave

Another trending travel tendency is a focus on wellness. Eighty-eight percent of respondents plan to spend either the same or more on wellness vacations in 2023 when compared to last year. Additionally, a majority of those surveyed are more focused on self-care now than they were last year, with 73 percent of respondents planning vacations specifically to better their mental, physical, and emotional health.

With summer travel gearing up in full force, it’s time to reflect on what you’re truly looking for out of a vacation. Mouthwatering food? A zen retreat? New and unique experiences? Or a glimpse of the Hollywood life?
