The regency-era drama based on 'Pride and Prejudice' premieres on May 6.

American period drama girlies have been dying to watch The Other Bennet Sister on the BBC, but it hasn’t been available to stream in the U.S. until now.
Based on the novel by Janice Hadlow and on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, The Other Bennet Sister is about Mary Bennet, the misunderstood, often-overlooked middle sister. While her sisters (Lizzy, Jane, Kitty, Lydia) are obsessing over men and going to balls, Mary seeks a different path. Traveling to London to live with her aunt and uncle, she starts a journey of self-discovery and becomes the protagonist in her own story.

Ella Bruccoleri (Call the Midwife, Bridgerton) stars as Mary Bennet, while Richard E. Grant (Withnail & I, Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Ruth Jones (Gavin & Stacey, Stella) co-star as Mr. and Mr. Bennet.
It’s got all the fixings of a period drama (the costumes, the cinematography, the witty banter, the cast) and it features an unlikely hero, which is such a breath of fresh air. As the BBC puts it: “While we might dream of being Lizzy, in reality most of us are more like Mary…”
“Mary’s not your typical period drama heroine,” Bruccoleri said about her character. “She lives in a world where, particularly for women, appearance is everything, and she doesn’t understand that value system at all. Instead, she turns to literature that offers a different viewpoint. Her favorite book is Fordyce’s Sermons to Young Women, because it argues that women shouldn’t have to be beautiful—they should be intelligent and pious.”

It’s been a hit since its March 15 debut! The first episode had a consolidated audience of 7.3 million and is the biggest launch of a new drama in the U.K. across all platforms and streamers since May 2025, with 4.1 million (56%) of the audience viewing on BBC iPlayer.
Clips of the 10-part series have made it onto TikTok, and the comments are mostly filled with people asking when they can watch it and how they can’t wait until May 6, when it premieres on BritBox in North America.
If you don’t have it already, you can watch BritBox shows on Prime Video, Roku or Xfinity for an additional price. BritBox is also available on smart TVs, Apple TV, Fire TV, Chromecast, iOS/Android devices, and on desktop.
It's nice to see a wallflower get her shot at the spotlight for once!
