What is Pride and Prejudice on Netflix about?

The Bennets home, Longbourn, is turned upside down when wealthy bachelor, the amiable Mr. Bingley, and his dour friend Mr. Darcy move into town. While eldest Bennet sister Jane falls in love with Mr. Bingley, Elizabeth decides Mr. Darcy is a miserable person she wants nothing to do with...until a few unexpected encounters and family scandals that paint in him a new light.

It’s Jane Austen’s most popular story that has been adapted two dozen times in various formats since 1940, from direct adaptations like 2005’s film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, to looser modern takes like 2001's Bridget Jones’s Diary (starring Renée Zellweger and Colin Firth, who also played Darcy in the 1995 BBC miniseries) and 2016's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Why is there yet another Pride and Prejudice adaptation happening?

It’s a classic that is still relevant today, according to Netflix. Series screenwriter Dolly Alderton said that the book is a "gift to adapt" because it's the "blueprint" for romantic comedy.

“In it lies the opportunity to examine the complexities of love, family, friendship, and society, while aspiring to Austen’s delightfully observational voice,” Alderton told Netflix. “With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I’m so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favorite book—and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr. Darcy.”

Corrin, who also starred in the 2022 Netflix adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, said playing Elizabeth is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honor,” they said. “I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”

Will Netflix's Pride and Prejudice stick to the book?

According to Netflix, it will stay close to the book but it will also “take some thoughtful creative turns.”

Who is behind the new Pride and Prejudice Netflix series?

Bestselling author and screenwriter Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love) and director Euros Lyn of Heartstopper fame are behind Netflix's Pride and Prejudice adaptation.

“We are delighted to be sharing this beloved British classic with our global audience. Pride and Prejudice is the ultimate romantic comedy,” Netflix executive Mona Qureshi said in a statement. “Dolly’s fierce intelligence and enormous heart, twinned with her genuine love of the Austen novel, mean she is able to bring new insights, whilst celebrating all that the generations of fans hold so dear. The caliber of a cast led by Emma, Jack, and Olivia is a testament to this precious story being in the best possible hands with Euros Lyn and the team at Lookout Point at the helm.”
