Your suitcase just got more expensive to bring along for the ride. JetBlue has officially bumped up its checked bag fees and the timing is no coincidence.

As jet fuel prices rise amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, airlines are looking for ways to offset rising costs without scaring off ticket buyers. JetBlue’s solution? Keep base fares relatively “competitive” and quietly charge you more for your suitcase.

The airline confirmed to CNBC this week that most travelers will now pay at least $4 more per checked bag on off-peak days, bringing the starting price to $39 if you prepay. If you’re traveling during busier periods (think summer, holidays or spring break), that same bag will cost you $49. Even more, if you wait until you’re at the airport to add it, you can tack on another $10 just for procrastinating. That’s a jump of more than 10% on quieter days and over 20% during peak travel windows.

Second bags are getting pricier, too. They’ll now start at $59 off-peak and $69 during high-demand periods, again with a $10 penalty for last-minute add-ons. The airline has used a dynamic pricing system since 2024, so fees fluctuate with demand.

In a statement, the airline said adjusting optional fees like checked bags allows it to manage those rising costs while continuing to offer perks like free Wi-Fi, snacks and seatback screens. JetBlue says the change comes down to one thing: fuel. Jet fuel prices have risen dramatically lately, climbing sharply since the start of the Iran conflict. Industry-wide, fuel is one of airlines’ biggest expenses, often second only to labor.

The bad news is that, historically, when one airline raises bag fees, others tend to follow suit. The last major wave of increases in 2024 saw multiple carriers move in near lockstep. Right now, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines still hover around the $35 starting point for a first checked bag, which makes JetBlue one of the pricier options overnight.

Whether that gap sticks (or sparks a domino effect) remains to be seen. But if history is any guide, your luggage may not be the only thing getting heavier this year.
