Kit Harrington is starring in an adaptation of one of Charles Dickens’ most famous works

Charles Dickens’ tale of revenge, sacrifice, renewal—and a very good love triangle—is coming to MGM+ in September.

It’s a four-part drama adaptation of A Tale Of Two Cities, starring Kit Harrington (Industry, Game of Thrones), François Civil (Beating Hearts, The Three Musketeers) and Mirren Mack (Miss Austen, Hedda), created and written by Daniel West, produced by Simon Meyers (I May Destroy You) and directed by Richard Clark (Outlander).

What is A Tale of Two Cities about?

As per MGM, it’s set in London in 1782, when tensions are running high during the war between France and Britain. “Lucie Manette (Mirren Mack) receives a message from Paris that her father, whom she assumed was dead for almost 20 years, may be alive. The messenger, idealistic French emigré, Charles Darnay (François Civil), is arrested and charged with treason. Lucie enlists the help of a brilliant but erratic young lawyer, Sydney Carton (Kit Harrington), to free Darnay in the hope he will lead her to Paris to track down her father.

Lucie’s collision with Darnay and Carton unleashes a powerful and complex love triangle. Both men fight to be worthy of her love and Lucie is torn over which one to choose. Yet neither man—physically so alike, spiritually poles apart—can escape the other. Instead, they find themselves bound together in life and death, through triumphs, tragedies, marriage, and murder.”

The last adaptation of the story was a 1989 British TV miniseries starring James Wilby as Sydney Carton and John Mills as Jarvis Lorry. Before that, there was a 1980 Hallmark Hall of Fame production starring Chris Sarandon in the dual roles of Carton and Charles Darnay, alongside Peter Cushing as Dr. Manette. There were other adaptations in 1958 and in 1935, the latter of which was nominated for two Academy Awards.

This adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities premieres on Sunday, September 6, with weekly releases on MGM+.
