Florence Pugh is taking on another iconic role you won't want to miss.
Set to stream on Netflix sometime later this year, East of Eden is a modern retelling of Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel written by Nobel Prize–winning author John Steinbeck in 1952. The novel follows the lives of two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltons, and their interwoven story from the early 20th century through World War I. The new series will focus on the multi-generational Trask family saga from the perspective of antagonist Cathy Ames, played by Pugh.
Pugh (Lady Macbeth, Little Women, Midsommar), who is also an executive producer on the show, will be joined by Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask, Hoon Lee as Lee, Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Joseph Zada as Cal Trask and Joe Anders as Aron Trask.
Written and executive-produced by Zoe Kazan (Clickbait, The Plot Against America, The Deuce), the seven-episode limited series has already begun filming in New Zealand. Director Garth Davis (Lion, Mary Magdalene) will helm Episodes 1–4, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (The Mustang, Lady Chatterley's Lover, The Act) will direct Episodes 5-7, according to Netflix.
Kazan is actually the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the 1955 East of Eden film starring James Dean. How cool that she's picking up where her grandfather left off!
"In the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on me," Kazan told Netflix. "But it is Steinbeck’s writing—personal, shocking, profound and free—that has kept me enthralled by East of Eden since I first read the book as a young teen."
