To see one of America's most awe-inspiring natural treasures, you'll have to venture into another outdoor landmark.

Ruby Falls, the tallest and deepest waterfall in America (that's open to public viewing), is also one of the country's most well-hidden destinations. Located inside Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the picturesque falls are 1,120 feet deep into the popular hiking mountain.

As reported by Travel + Leisure, all visits to see Ruby Falls must be guided in order to preserve the cavern. Visitors must book a ticket to descend 26 stories (260 feet) in Lookout Mountain via a glass elevator, where you'll then be taken on a half-mile stroll through a cavern to enjoy a close-up view of Ruby Falls. Of course, the falls aren't the only natural attraction to enjoy on the tour—travelers are immersed in stalactite, stalagmites and natural formations surrounding the waterfall. Because the tour is indoors, it can take place in any weather, any season, and the space naturally retains a temperature of around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Strollers are not permitted and unfortunately, the terrain isn't currently wheelchair accessible. Tickets for the 2-3 hour tours are only sold online and cost $25 for adults.

Those who want an even more adventurous experience can also book a lantern tour, which takes place on Fridays after 9pm and is guided by dim lantern light.

If you're planning for the future, you can look forward to luxury treehouses opening to Ruby Falls tourists in 2023, so you can enjoy a night in the treetops before descending into the depths of a cave.
