Today, we’re rich in details for the next season of HBO Max’s The Gilded Age!
HBO finally announced the premiere date and dropped season 4 trailer, which is delightfully looking more dramatic than the last three seasons.
According to an article by Variety today, the new season is a tonal shift for the show. Stakes are raised on just about everything, and it’s going to take a toll on relationships, careers, faith and more.

What is The Gilded Age season 4 about?
“Bertha Russell changed Society at a cost. Now, her family must reckon with the consequences as Agnes van Rhijn seizes an opportunity to regain her position," reads the official logline for The Gilded Age season 4, per HBO Max. "Meanwhile, Marian forges a new path for herself, and Peggy works to be accepted by her future in-laws. In this new era, you must be careful what you wish for.”
The repercussions of Bertha’s decision to marry off their daughter, Gladys, are still coming to roost—George is still holding it against her and it’s taking a toll on their marriage, according to the Variety piece.
“We find out that George has not really forgiven Bertha from what he sees as a transgression,” series star Carrie Coon, who plays Bertha, tells the publication. “He thinks she has meddled in a very compromising way in their children’s personal lives. He is ruthless, but he’s ruthless in business—not with his family. What he doesn’t understand is that that’s the only place Bertha gets to operate, through this sphere.”
George is also facing a sort of midlife crisis after the attempt on his life in season 3 and is rethinking it all. “I think the most fundamental relationship in his life has really disintegrated,” Spector tells Variety, “and I think he doesn’t know which end is up.”
One relationship that is going strong is the partnership between Oscar Van Rhijn (Blake Ritson) and Enid Winterton (Kelley Curran), who are hellbent on disrupting society.
“The goal is to become the pinnacle of high society,” Ritson tells Variety. “It's to take down Mrs. Astor, to shoot past Mrs. Russell and to be the king and queen of high society.”
Peggy will take center stage in the Black world as a professional writer and career woman, but somehow still needs to earn the approval of her persnickety mother-in-law.
