These holiday events, both small-scale and epic-sized, are sure to thrill visitors around the country.

This time of year, most every community in the U.S. hosts some kind of holiday lights spectacular, in small town squares and among glittering skyscrapers—and the moment that the tree lights are turned on provides an incredible experience of good cheer as the “ahhs” are audible. If your town has a railroad, there’s often a Polar Express ride through the night that thrills people of all ages, and many people put candles in their windows and decorate for Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas. It feels good to think about others as you pick out gifts or bake sweets—and this time of year can feel earnest and repair some of the year’s wrongs as we prepare to start a whole new year afresh.

With our feature of magical holiday events, we’ve tried to come up with some more out-of-the-ordinary ones, events specially curated to elicit a sense of magic… to help us find simple pleasure in being filled with wonder. Maybe it’s been a while since our eyes widened in surprise, since we felt the stirrings of awe—maybe our Grinchy hearts are starting to get bigger and our Scroogian workaholic natures need to be adjusted. It may sound like a cliché, but trying to see the world through a child’s eyes, surprised and delighted by so many things—even if it’s just the sound of sleighbells as a horse trots by, or the glow cast by a row of bulbs, or craning your head back to see the top of a towering tree—it’s worth it to let ourselves feel something bigger than ourselves.

The most magical holiday events in the U.S.

Scottsdazzle | Scottsdale, AZ

Magic factor: Seeing gleaming lights reflected in the water.

Scottsdale’s beautiful historic downtown and its mile-long canal transform each winter into Scottsdazzle, an event with glowing holiday lights reflected in the water. Along with the visual splendor, there’s a sing-along and tree lighting ceremony, outdoor holiday market, live nativity, art walk and an Old Town scavenger hunt on bikes (participants are encouraged to decorate their bikes for this “Sparkle and Spin Scavenger Hunt”)—altogether, 45 different events under the Scottsdazzle umbrella.

Date: November 29 through December 31.

Price: Free.

Nature at Night at Lost Canyon Cave & Nature Trail | Ridgedale, MO

Magic factor: Experiencing the wonder of wildlife in a serene setting

Deep in the Missouri Ozarks, an unusual experience beckons at the Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve. During the Nature at Night experience, guests drive an electric golf cart along a 2.5-mile lighted trail with giant light installations depicting wildlife—along with waterfalls, bridges, massive limestone formations and even a glowing cave experience. To further enhance the holiday vibe, you can stop inside the Lost Canyon Cave and its drive-up Bat Bar (yes, there’s a live bat colony inside) to order hot chocolate and snacks. Your ticket also includes admission to the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum.

Date: November 2, 2025 through year’s end.

Price: $50 adults and $30 aged 4–11 plus a flat $15 entry fee per car to enter Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve.

Magical Christmas Journey at Verde Canyon | Clarkdale, AZ

Magic factor: A train to the North Pole with a chance to fly like an eagle.

Along across the country, special holiday trains—often branded as the Polar Express—depart from depots with delighted children aboard. But we especially love the nature component of the Magical Christmas Journey train from the Verde Canyon Railroad. Before boarding, riders meet Flurry, a real bald eagle, and receive a lesson on wing flapping. Then they don eagle wings to “soar” through a cute village of 10 tiny Christmas houses. Luminarias line the depot roof, while icicle lights dangle from the pergolas. (Magic, I tell ya!) The one-hour train ride includes seasonal drinks and entertainment from elves, ending at the North Pole to see Santa and Mrs. Claus, the toy workshop, Mrs. Claus’s bakery, the reindeer flight school and—this is a new one—the ugly sweater factory. We love the charm of teaching kids to fly like an eagle.

Date: November 28 through December 24, 2025.

Price: $60 adults, $40 kids aged 2–10 and $10 more on Christmas Eve.

Seaside Sock Skating | Santa Barbara, CA

Magic factor: The exhilaration of “ice skating” with a distinctly California take.

Rooftop sock skating within view of the Pacific Ocean? Sign us all up. Why struggle with ice skates, falling on a punishing surface and being cold to boot? At Santa Barbara’s Wolf Museum of Exploration and Innovation, an interactive science museum nicknamed MOXI, you can kick off your shoes and glide across a specialty tile floor on the museum’s rooftop, “skating” without all those pesky balance issues. It doesn’t hurt that you can look across to palm trees and the expanse of the Pacific. Sock skating is included in your museum admission. You skate in your own socks—may we suggest a Rudolph print—so don’t wear flip-flops by accident!

Date: November 22, 2025 through February 1, 2026.

Price: $25 adults, $20 kids aged 2–12.

Rat Pack Christmas | New York, NY

Magic factor: Hearing nostalgic Christmas music in a nostalgic setting

Sit back with your martini, listening to iconic songs from the Christmas with the Rat Pack album. This featured Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. crooning their mistletoe-struck hearts out—and now performed by Rocco Dellaneve in the beautifully decorated environs of New York’s famous Algonquin Hotel (Dorothy Parker, anyone?). Rocco’s always accompanied by the precision dancing, high-kicking Serafinas in their glamorous vintage costumes.

Date: Every Thursday in December

Price: Free but purchasing drinks/bites is encouraged.

Lighted Farm Implement Parade | Sunnyside, WA

Magic factor: Honoring the hard work that puts food on our holiday tables.

At this unusual Lighted Farm Implement Parade, the glowing beauties gliding past aren’t trees and floats: they’re farming machinery. The parade began in 1989 with just a few families organizing their decorated trucks, and now there are dozens of tractors, combines and antique farming equipment gleaming with twinkling lights. It’s one of the country’s oldest farm-implement parades and something everyone looks forward to in the gorgeous Yakima Valley—along with the season’s Christmas Market, chili feed, a separate lighted parade and wine from this region (which represents a third of the state’s planted acreage).

Date: December 6, 2025.

Price: Free.

Texas Winter Lights | Houston, TX

Magic factor: A playful Texas rooftop with nightly “snowfall.”

We’re a sucker for snowfall and rooftops, and this event delivers both—along with the chance to celebrate a Texas-flavored holiday by floating down a heated, glowing lazy river in the shape of the state. The annual Texas Winter Lights takes place at the Marriott Marquis Houston’s Altitude Rooftop, although you don’t have to be a hotel guest to attend. At this Western-themed celebration, there will be 100,000 sparkling lights, line dancing under the stars, live country bands, dueling pianos and Texas-inspired bites like brisket and Totchos. This rooftop pulls out all the stops with a VR sleigh ride with Santa, curling, light-up checkers, igloos and cabins, holiday films, holiday cocktails (including one secret one off the menu), visits from the North Pole’s favorite fella and even… nightly snowfalls. Yes! Finally, the hotel’s restaurant will host a grinch brunch on December weekends.

Date: November 17 through December 31, 2025.

Price: Tickets start at $30 for adults and $20 for children ages 2–12; free for hotel guests.

Lake Morey Skating Trail | Fairlee, VT

Magic factor: Skating around the shore of iced-over Vermont lake

There’s nothing wrong with turning endless circles on a rink, but if you have the chance to skate freestyle along a trail (there are some great ones in Canada, too) embrace it! The Lake Morey Skating Trail stretches 4.5 miles around the circumference of the lake shore, free for all to come and enjoy. Skate with a gaggle of friends or experience a solitary connection with the lake and the sky and the sound of your blades carving ice. There are benches to sit to lace up your own skates, while skate rentals, hot cocoa and snacks are available at the Lake Morey Resort’s clubhouse. The lake usually freezes up mid-January to permit skating (you can check the webcam to track progress), and there’s even a dozen hockey areas with wooden goals. To extend the magic, spend the night at the resort or one of its lakeside cottages and dine at its restaurant.

Date: It depends on Mother Nature's chilly power, but the trail is usually open mid-January through the end of February.

Red Earth Treefest | Oklahoma City, OK

Magic factor: Connecting with nature and Native American culture

In one of the most meaningful and possibly moving Christmas tree displays in the nation, the Red Earth Treefest showcases Christmas trees that have been transformed into works of art, decorated by Native American artisans from tribal nations across Oklahoma. The handmade ornaments celebrate culture through beadwork, clay and natural materials gathered from tribal lands, offering insight into how Indigenous communities interpret the season. The 16 trees featured in 2025’s 11th annual Treefest are lovingly decorated by more than a dozen Oklahoman tribal nations, including the Kiowa, Osage, Comanche and other nations. The Red Earth Art Center is open year-round with a collection of more than 1,000 items of Native art and objects, including the Deupree Cradleboard Collection.

Date: November 13 through December 31, 2025.

Price: Free.

Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas | Pigeon Forge, TN

Magic factor: Riding roller coasters in a decorated, cozy environment.

Pretty much every theme park rolls out the red (and green) carpet for the holidays, but this year we’re rooting for Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas. It’s a winter wonderland lit with more than six million twinkling lights, covered in dozens of Christmas trees and with a new candy-striped land called Peppermint Valley (the Country Fair area, transformed). Plus: We’re all so relieved Dolly’s okay after her health scare, we’ve got to go and pay homage.

Date: November 1, 2025 through January 4, 2026.

Price: $95 adults aged 10–61, $85 aged 4–9 and 62+.

Christmas Prelude | Kennebunkport, ME

Magic factor: Seeing an oceanside town covered in snow.

Christmas arrives with a Maine flair at Christmas Prelude, an event featuring more than 160 events over 11 days. While we love Kennebunkport in summer, in winter it takes on a new and special atmosphere. You can hold hands in mittens with your favorite person as you experience tree lightings (the giant tree in the town square is decorated with buoys and lobsters, naturally, while another tree is crafted completely of stacked lobster traps), parades, caroling at the Franciscan Monastery, fireworks, a street festival, craft fairs (with wonderful Maine-made gifts), a hat parade (everyone wears a hat!) and a pooch parade for all well-behaved canines. Best of all, Santa arrives by (what else?) lobster boat on December 7.

Date: December 4–14, 2025.

Price: Most events are free.
