Safeway returns to Oakridge with a massive two-level flagship, and opening day comes with a giveaway

Oakridge Park has welcomed luxury boutiques, restaurants, rooftop greenery and a whole new cultural scene this summer. Now, one very practical piece of the puzzle is finally about to click into place.
The new Safeway opens in two days.
This enormous new grocery store will welcome its first shoppers at 10 am on Thursday, August 27, bringing Safeway back to the Oakridge site for the first time since the old (and sorely missed) location closed in January 2020. A grand-opening ceremony begins at 9:30 am, and Oakridge Park says the first 888 customers will receive a lucky red envelope.
So yes, this is your cue to start planning that grocery run.
The opening feels particularly significant because Oakridge Park has already become one of Vancouver’s buzziest new destinations since making its debut in May.
At the heart of it is Time Out Market Vancouver, where some of the city’s standout chefs and restaurants have been gathered under one roof. Between meals, drinks, live music, DJ nights and other programming, the Market has helped turn a trip to Oakridge into considerably more than a shopping expedition.
The arrival of Safeway now adds the decidedly useful possibility of stocking the fridge while you’re there, too.
The new Safeway spans more than 50,000 square feet over two levels and is being positioned as a flagship for the region. Located underground and accessible from Oakridge Park’s south atrium, the store is poised to become a daily destination.

Expect an in-store sushi counter, Asian hot foods, dim sum, buffet-style dishes and plenty of ready-to-eat options.
There’s also a dedicated Global Market highlighting international foods, while the seafood department features fresh fish and shellfish alongside live seafood tanks.
Upstairs, things veer beyond the traditional grocery run. The second level includes a full pharmacy, general merchandise, a baby boutique and a Rachelle Béry wellness destination specializing in natural and organic products. Starbucks is returning to the store as well.
In other words, you may go in for milk and emerge with your shopping cart overflowing.
Safeway Oakridge Park opens August 27 at 10 am at 650 West 41st Avenue. The grand-opening festivities start at 9:30 am, and if those lucky red envelopes have your name on them, you might want to arrive early.
