Vancouver might have beaches, forests and mountains within its attractions-filled city limits, but one of its greatest luxuries is how easily you can leave it behind. Within an hour or two, you can be sipping wine in the Fraser Valley, hiking beneath towering waterfalls, wandering colourful island villages or standing atop snow-covered peaks. Whether you’re craving a road trip, ferry ride or scenic railway journey, these are the best day trips from Vancouver for every kind of traveller.

Best day trips from Vancouver

Bowen Island

Distance: 20-minute ferry from Horseshoe Bay

The easiest island escape from Vancouver feels a world away. Spend the day kayaking the shoreline, wandering Snug Cove’s cafés and galleries, hiking to Dorman Point or enjoying fresh seafood overlooking the marina.

Steveston

Distance: 35 minutes

This historic fishing village in Richmond delivers boardwalks, fish and chips, whale-watching tours and one of the province’s most charming waterfronts. It feels more like a small maritime town than part of Metro Vancouver.

Fort Langley

Distance: 50 minutes

Known as the birthplace of British Columbia, this riverside village mixes heritage buildings with boutiques, bakeries, antique shops and excellent brunch spots. Great for slower-paced exploring.

Squamish

Distance: 1 hour

Adventure capital meets brewery town. Pass by Shannon Falls on your drive there, ride the Sea to Sky Gondola, hike the Stawamus Chief, watch climbers scale granite walls or grab a beer downtown before heading back.

British Columbia wine isn’t just about the Okanagan. Fraser Valley wineries are producing increasingly impressive cool-climate wines, with vineyards surrounded by mountain views and farm-to-table restaurants.

Distance: 1 hour 30 minutes

One of the easiest big-payoff hikes near Vancouver. A short forest walk leads to a dramatic curtain of water cascading over smooth rock, making it an ideal stop as part of a Fraser Valley road trip.

Cultus Lake

Distance: 1 hour 40 minutes

Clear water, sandy beaches and forested hills make Cultus Lake one of the Lower Mainland’s favourite summer escapes. Rent a kayak or simply spend the afternoon swimming.

Harrison Hot Springs

Distance: 1 hour 45 minutes

Whether you soak in the hot springs, rent a boat on Harrison Lake or simply stroll the waterfront promenade, this resort town delivers a genuine holiday atmosphere without requiring an overnight stay.

Whistler

Distance: 1 hr 45 min

The obvious classic, but for good reason. The Sea-to-Sky Highway alone makes the journey worthwhile, while the village offers mountain biking, hiking, lakes, gondolas, spas, patios and some of British Columbia’s best dining. Summer visitors can ride the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, paddle Alta Lake or tackle alpine trails.

Salt Spring Island

Distance: Around 2.5 to 3 hours (drive and ferry)

The largest of the Southern Gulf Islands rewards an early start with artisan studios, lavender fields, vineyard tastings and one of the province’s best Saturday farmers’ markets. Spend the day browsing handmade ceramics, sampling local cheeses and cider, doing yoga or hiking to panoramic viewpoints before catching an evening ferry back.
