FEMME Art Fair

FEMME Art Fair arrives in DC with a pointed premise: women make up an enormous share of the art world's creative workforce while receiving a much smaller slice of its money. The four-day fair, running August 27 through 30 at The Square DC, puts that imbalance front and center without reducing the experience to a lecture about representation. Artists from around the country will be on view, with the Guerrilla Girls featured as part of the program, and 100 percent of artwork sales go directly to the artists. That last detail matters. This is a fair where browsing can actually translate into support for the people making the work, rather than simply adding another name to a gallery's roster. For local art fans, it is a useful chance to see work beyond the usual museum circuit while thinking more critically about who gets visibility, money and room to build a career.
