The chef/owner of one of H Street’s best restaurants, the Atlas Room, spent time at Vidalia downtown. His own place serves food majoring on local ingredients, with French and Italian influences in the cooking style—the likes of lamb meatballs with a white bean garlic purée, basil, yogurt and an olive coulis, or roast chicken with roast potato, spring onions, oyster mushrooms, green beans and a herbed jus.

Atlas Room is a fantastic date spot: It's dimly lit, small, quiet and very private. While the entrées here are delicious, my favorite thing to do was to go and have dessert and cocktails. The most memorable dessert I ever had here, which kept me coming back for more, was the house-made lavender ice cream with honey. And the bartender here really knows how to make a solid classic cocktail, and he knows exactly when to leave you alone and when to chat. Atlas Room is a great spot for when you want to savor your drink, your food and your time.
