What is it? The 50th anniversary of pride celebrations in D.C. is even bigger this year because the city hosts World Pride, a biannual global celebration filled with concerts, events, marches, parades and more to celebrate and uplift the LGBTQ+ community.
Why go: This festival will span the whole city and there are plenty of ways to participate. A number of marches are happening, like the National Trans Visibility March (June 5-8). The schedule includes plenty of cultural events, like the WorldPride Film Festival (May 27-29) at Alamo Drafthouse and the two-day World Pride Music Festival: Global Dance Party (June 6-7) at RFK Festival Grounds that includes acts like Jennifer Lopez, Troye Sivan, Trisha Paytas and RAYE. Beloved local traditions are included too, like the annual 17th Steet Block Party (June 6-7) to celebrate Dupont Circle's history as the city's epicenter of gay culture, and the WorldPride Parade (June 7) and street festival (June 7-8), each of which culminates in free concerts from Wicked star Cynthia Erivo and rapper Doechii, respectively.
Time Out tip: D.C. is a public transit town, and WMATA is making it easier to get around to celebrate Pride. A new tap-to-pay fare system that is expected to be rolled out by the end of the month will let riders pay directly with credit or debit cards via their digital wallets.
