The one thing you'll hear about the Spaniards is that Dick Turpin hung out here, and while that may or may not be true (it's been a boozer since 1580 and looks every bit the highwayman's tavern), the fact that there's a 'doggy wash' (a car wash for mucky mutts, £5 for five minutes, £9 for 15) says rather more about the place today. The pub's relative inaccessibility at the side of the heath is also its chief advantage. In winter folk stop off mid-walk and warm up on the splendid pub grub before settling in a booth with one of the 24 draughts - perhaps an Adnams, Marston's Pedigree or Roosters Special, say - only to stumble out hours later into the dark, dark woods. The traditional British food includes posh mushrooms on toast, two different types of sausage, a 'pie of the day', fish-cakes, citrus-braised Ely Valley lamb shank, and spit-roasted pigs on high days and holidays (and sunny weekends).

Well, I might be slightly biased, but I'd say because I'm a fun, well-travelled, thoughtful, grounded, social, open-minded and hard-working guy...

we had a horrid experience at the spaniards on sunday 6th september 2009. The staff were off-hand and don't know the meaning of customer service, ok they were busy but isn't this what they're paid to do.. serve people. We waited for half an hour just to place the order for sunday lunch. Then waited an hour and a half to be served a big slab of burnt on the outside and completely raw on the inside beef. I mean medium rare is one thing but a quick look at a grill is another. When we put in a polite complaint the manager was down right cheeky. I'll never go back here again. £30 for a main course for two. Which consisted of roughly cut cold cabbage and a small spoonful of mashed carrots and potatoes. Don't go. vote with your feet folks.
This place is Magical! Get there, get there now.
I went to the Spaniard's for some food and drink on a Thurdsday evening. The pub certainly has charm and it is nice to think that you are out in the countryside...as it were. The pub has a good selection of beers and the wine was good. I have to say that the food was appalling...not up anywhere near to gastro-pub standard - this is old skool pub grub. I had a fish & chips (very soggy fish). However, my girlfriend ordered the trout and new potatoes (a main meal, and not marked as a salad)- this turned out to be a cold fish flake salad with brown and tired looking salad leaves (with no dressing, not even any olive oil) and huge 'new' potatoes (with no oil or butter to speak of) which looked and tasted like they'd been slowly shrivelling up in a tupperware tub in the back of the fridge for a few weeks. In conclusion I would say that this is a good pub for a drink!
I went to the Spaniards inn for bite to eat today with my wife. The place has its charm but we had a terrible experience.
All roasts ran out before 4pm. After having our orders taken, we were asked to change them as the meals we ordered had now run out.
The service is awful, borderline incompetent. After asking to see a menu to re-order our meals, the service staff who claimed she could remember the menu neglected to tell my wife the lasagne was vegetarian dish.
After we worked this out less than 5 mins later, we attempted to change the order, we were told it was too late. The lasagne was served undercooked, the pasta sheets were still hard.
I know every place has its off days but i would not take the chance if you are really hungry.
This pub is nice as it feels like you are in a country side pub whilst there...not in the busy city. check out the blonde barman, thats my main reason for drinking here these days!
