Jah Shaka Soundsystem Carnival Session

Critics' choice

A key figure in the shaping of UK soundsystem culture, legendary operator Jah Shaka has been relaying progressive, rootsy reggae and deep dub for decades. His earthy, heavy tones have influenced everyone from DMZ to the Ragga Twins over the years, and he's still a master at blasting out the low frequencies. Here he plays a session to warm-up Londoners for the Notting Hill Carnival, where his influence can again be heard echoing through the streets.

Jamaica Rum Tings Carnival Warm-Up Party with Daddy G

Critics' choice

The Jamaica Rum Tings party crew return for another Carnival-flavoured bash – hosted by rum manufacturer Wray & Nephew – in advance of the main Notting Hill event. There's a pretty stonking line-up providing the tunes: Massive Attack founding member Daddy G playing a special reggae set, D&B hero Fabio spinning a rub and roots set, London reggae/punk ledge Don Letts, a sound-clash between Uncle Dugs and Navigator, the Rompa's Reggae Shack crew and many more. There's also a jerk barbecue on the venue's terrace and plenty of rum-based cocktails and competitions. Top Carnival pre-party action.

Deadly Rhythm Carnival After Party

Critics' choice

Low-key high impact party crew Deadly Rhythm are sticking to their south London roots and hosting their Carnival after party in Corsica Studios. As ever with Deadly Rhythm, the emphasis is on quality underground producers rather than crowd-pleasing names with an entourage the size of Sweden, which is why we love 'em. Headlining is Baltimore DJ and producer Karizma, who's just as happy serving up warm, soulful house as he is dipping into deeper territory. Eglo Records co-founder and genre switching DJ Alexander Nut, glitchy tech producer Jon Rust and Deadly residents support, at what should be the finest selection of underground sounds over the Carnival weekend.

Dubwise After-Carnival Jam

Critics' choice

Seriously dubby vibes at this post-Carnival low frequency-fest, courtesy of the Young Warrior (AKA son of legendary soundsystem operator Jah Shaka) Sound System. More dub, reggae and bassy business supplied by London's Youthman Sound, Roots Guidance Sound System and more. There's also a barbecue, rum punch, food from DubWise Kitchen and – most importantly – free whistles! They'll rue the day they decided on that one after about half an hour, but it'll still be all kinds of fun.

The Jamm Carnival Clash

Critics' choice

The majority of Carnival party action may take place close to the event's west London hub, but Brixton venue Jamm always reps south London well at this time of year. Taking control once again are the raucous Gold Teeth DJs, plus Soul Jamm and the About to Blow team, all of whom will be smashing out filthy, bassy, dancefloor-filling sounds, including garage, grime, dancehall, hip hop and reggae.

Your Mum's House: The Carnival Turn-Up

Critics' choice

'What did you do for Carnival?' 'Oh, I went to Your Mum's House. It was dirty and loads of fun.' Upping the potential for 'your mum' jokes wherever they go, raucous party crew YMH break out the goods for Carnival to unleash a rock-solid selection of bass, hip hop, garage and house. The DJ line-up is tba, but rest assured it'll be a stellar selection of selectors. Deviation Carnival Session

Critics' choice

Benji B's ever-impressive, bass-hungry club night rolls into west London's Paradise by Way of Kensal Green for some Carnival carnage. The line-up is being kept under wraps for the time being, but these sessions are renowned for bringing in tons of formidable selectors across drum 'n' bass, jungle, grime, garage, bashment and other party-ready sounds. Last year's bill featured Zinc, Artwork, Toddla A, DJ Die and Newham Generals, so expect spinners of a similar calibre this time around.
