Wed May 25 2011
South Norwalk, CT
Travel time 1 hour by train or 1 hour 30 minutes by car.
The revitalized historic district is home to cafés, art galleries and two different aquatic-themed attractions. In the Energy Lab at the Stepping Stones Museum for Children (303 West Ave; 203-899-0606, steppingstonesmuseum.org. $15, children under 1 free), tykes use waterwheels, basins, funnels and waterfalls to explore hydropower. About a mile away, just a few minutes' walk from the Metro-North station, you'll find the Maritime Aquarium (10 N Water St; 203-852-0700, maritimeaquarium.org. $13, children ages 2–12 $10, children under 2 free), where kids can watch harbor seals eat their lunch, scope out baby sea horses and even pet a live stingray (fear not: barbs have been removed). Afterward, adjacent to the Aquarium on a bluff overlooking the Norwalk River, you'll find Oyster Shell Park; trails wind through marsh grasses, reeds and wildflowers. A few blocks from the park, Sono Brewhouse (13 Marshall St; 203-853-9110, sonobrewhouse.com) has a reassuringly typical children's menu—plus a very respectable beer list for you.—Amanda Glen
