NYC hosts a slew of solid summer festivals and outdoor summer music parties each year, but among them, Afropunk sits in a league of its own—not only with the hottest acts on stage, but with the hottest styles in the audience, too. The once-free fest returned this year as a paid event (to much initial dismay), but our two days spent in Commodore Barry Park last weekend delivered on all expectations and made those ticket fees totally worth it. Focused around celebrating black music in all its diverse forms, we heard it all: big name headliners like Lauryn Hill, Lenny Kravitz and Grace Jones alongside more niche acts playing hardcore thrash (Suicidal Tendencies), jazz fusion (Thundercat), Jersey club (DJ UNiiQU3) and everything in between.
