Beautiful weather and the allure of a $400 grand prize drew teams to the 22nd annual Coney Island Sand Sculpting Contest and Unity Day. About 50 mounds of sand were molded into fanciful castle towers, lounging mermaids and one cleverly conceived seaweed sandwich during the afternoon. Despite the high stakes, participants tore themselves away from their ephemeral structures to enjoy dips in the ocean, hot dogs from Nathans and sunbathing.
