Antica Birreria Peroni review

This long-standing centro storico birreria - which was here decades before all those lookalike Irish pubs - is the perfect place for a quick lunch or dinner. Service is rough-and-Roman but friendly, and the food - five or six hot pasta dishes or risottos, salmon, various salads and cold cuts - is good and relatively cheap. Sausage, though, is the main act: three different types of German-style wurstel are on offer. The birreria still retains its original art nouveau decor, with a chiaroscuro frieze featuring such slogans as 'drink beer and you'll live to be 100'. At lunch, if you're in a real hurry, you can join the row of office-worker regulars eating their pasta standing up at the bar. There are four Peroni beers on draught, including the excellent lager (birra chiara in Italian). Unusually for Rome, service is included.
