Asia is home to a lot of pretty impressive human-made spectacles: from world-class modern cities to magical forgotten temples. And if you’re looking for a natural wonder, the region is overflowing with options. Deep in the emerald heart of Borneo’s rainforest stands a record-breaker that feels almost mythical. Meet Menara – the world’s tallest tropical tree – a towering yellow meranti that stretches an eye-watering 100.8 metres into the canopy. Discovered in 2018, this botanical giant has become something of a pilgrimage site for nature lovers, proving that sometimes the most awe-inspiring landmarks aren’t built – they’re grown.

Where is the world’s tallest tropical tree?

Menara rises from the lush lowland rainforest of the Danum Valley Conservation Area in Malaysian Borneo. This protected pocket of ancient jungle is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet – and the perfect home for a tree of this stature.

How do I get to Menara?

Getting here is part of the adventure. Most visitors begin in Lahad Datu, the nearest gateway town. From there, it’s roughly a two-hour drive into the conservation area, typically arranged through guided tours or accommodation providers. As you’d expect, access to Menara itself is restricted and usually requires coordination with researchers or official guides – this isn’t a casual stroll situation.

Can you climb Menara?

Technically, yes – but not in the “throw on your activewear and give it a go” sense. Only trained researchers and professional climbers have scaled Menara, using specialised rope systems to study the tree and surrounding canopy. For everyone else, it’s strictly admire-from-below territory (which, let's be honest, is still wildly impressive).

What can you see near Menara?

The surrounding rainforest is the real scene-stealer. Within the Danum Valley Conservation Area, you might spot orangutans, pygmy elephants, clouded leopards (if you’re very lucky), and a kaleidoscope of birdlife. There are also canopy walkways, jungle trekking routes and pristine rivers that make the journey just as memorable as the destination.

Where can you stay near Menara?

For front-row access to the rainforest, book a stay at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. This eco-luxe retreat offers guided wildlife experiences and puts you right on the edge of the conservation area – meaning you’re never far from the action (or the sounds of the jungle at night).

When’s the best time to visit Menara?

Sabah is a year-round destination, but the drier months between March and October tend to offer better conditions for trekking and wildlife spotting. That said, this is a tropical rainforest – expect humidity, sudden downpours and gloriously green scenery whenever you go.
