A SCAD MFA Painting Thesis Exhibition
OPENING RECEPTION: MONDAY MAY 11, 2015 from 7-10pm
May 12-17 at The Low Museum by appointment

The Low Museum of Contemporary Culture is pleased to present BALOONLAGOON, an MFA Thesis Exhibition by Savannah College of Art and Design MFA Painting Candidate, Laila Kouri.

The works featured in BALOONLAGOON challenge the notion of what makes a painting a painting. Kouri creates object-based compositions that utilize three-dimensional, mass-produced objects in place of two-dimensional paint and canvas in order to re-contextualize traditional avant-garde ideals. Kouri embraces objects in their natural state, free from illusionistic space and old-fashioned discourses based on surface flatness to combat the “rules of painting” determined by art critic, Clement Greenberg.

While Greenberg argued that content promoted illusion and ‘pure’ painting had to be free of all mimicry, Kouri argues that paint applied to canvas still promotes illusion because it is creating an appearance of something that never existed before, whether abstract or not. Her solution is to embrace content by using real things that are tangible in real space, presenting formal arrangements that mean nothing more nor less than what they are. She calls her work non-conceptual-conceptual art.

BALOONLAGOON combines modernist values with contemporary objects to establish a new figure/ground relationship of self-awareness and formal concerns.
