Join us for the latest film in our movie series, 'Germany in the 20th Century through the films of Germany's greatest directors,' and enjoy a cocktail as we screen "Crossing the Bridge - the Sound of Istanbul," directed by Fatih Akin with an introduction by Dr. Berna Gueneli from Grinnell College.

As part of our celebrations to mark our 40 year anniversary in Atlanta, we'll be watching films that have already been screened at the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta - one from each of the last four decades. "Crossing the Bridge - the Sound of Istanbul" was first screened here in 2011.

Start the evening with our featured cocktail before settling down to watch the film.

The film will be introduced by Dr. Berna Gueneli is an assistant professor of German from Grinnell College. Dr. Gueneli received her Ph.D. in Germanic Studies from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2011. Her research interests include Transnational cinema (filmic representation of multiethnicity, borders, and migration), Turkish-German studies, Film sound & sound studies, Weimar Cinema, 20th -21st century German studies and European Studies

A question and answer session with Dr. Gueneli will follow the film, along with a reception.

A little about the film:

Award-winning director Fatih Akin takes us on a journey through Istanbul, the city that bridges Europe and Asia, and challenges familiar notions of east and west. He looks at the vibrant musical scene which includes traditional Turkish music plus rock and hip-hop.

The film will be shown in German with English subtitles. Approximate length: 90 minutes.
