Frank Morgan began as jazz royalty, impressing the likes of Charlie Parker and Billie Holliday with his soulful alto sax. But when heroin took hold, he became a master of larceny as well, and his frequent residencies at San Quentin State Prison add a stark, stony dimension to his tale. "Sound of Redemption" strikes a beautifully delicate balance between being an exacting dissection of mad genius and a straight-up concert film, gifting viewers not only with generous footage of Morgan's passionate playing, but also of a lively, San Quentin-set tribute gig featuring saxophonists Mark Gross and Grace Kelly, bassist Ron Carter, pianist George Cables, drummer Marvin Smith, and trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, each of whom bring us to profound gratitude for the man and his sound.

Sound of Redemption: The Frank Morgan Story is a documentary feature and is an official selection of the 2015 Atlanta Film Festival.
