Southern Exposures says
Southern Exposures: Walker Evans and Contemporary Photography in the South.

One of the strengths of the High's photography program is the emphasis it has placed on pictures made in and of the South. As the Walker Evans retrospective comes to a close, let's take this time to reflect on the state of contemporary southern photography. Although Evans himself was not from the South, his iconic work in Hale County, Alabama during the Great Depression has defined the ways in which many people around the nation and the world envision our region and its past.

Join us as we hear from Mark Sloan and Alex Harris, both of whom have ruminated deeply on the relationship between photography and the South. Mark Sloan, Director and Chief Curator of the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art in Charleston, has been working on a project related specifically to Southern photography in the 21st century. Alex Harris is a Southern photographer who studied at Yale, where Evans taught at the end of his career.

Tickets required: $10 for not-yet members, $5 for students, FREE for members.
