In queso you missed it last year, Suwanee’s Big Cheesy is returning to Town Center Park on Saturday, April 16 from 4-10 p.m.

The winner of not one but TWO Kaleidoscope Awards from the Southeast Festivals and Events Association, Big Cheesy will feature cooking demos as well as cheese and beverage pairings, on-site cheese sculpting, food trucks and other vendors offering cheese-related products (including grilled cheese doughnuts), an artisan market, and live musical performances, including cheesy Journey tribute band Departure.

“Suwanee Big Cheesy was Edam grate event last year!” said Suwanee Events Manager Amy Doherty. “From tastings to cooking demonstrations to Departure’s performance – it’s going to be a gouda time, any way you slice it!”

Big Cheesy is a free event featuring select artisans selling unique cheeses and complimentary products. Confirmed vendors include Tom + Chee and their famous grilled cheese doughnuts, and Freckled & Blue food truck with their delightful pimento cheese. The artisan market will feature fresh local cheeses, breads, olive oils, local honey, and other delights from Mussengang goat cheeses, Caly Road Creamery, Cheeses & Mary, Crave Pie, Java Genesis coffee, Savage Jerky, and many more!

Sarah Kaufmann, aka the Cheese Lady, will be on hand creating an oversized cheese carving. Kaufmann earned a Guinness World Record for creating the world’s largest cheese carving at the 2011 Wisconsin State Fair – a 925-pound cheese roller coaster. She’ll educate the audience about cheese and, perhaps best of all, share edible samples from her carving.

The event will also feature live chef demonstrations and tastings, kids games and activities, an amateur cheese carving event, and for the DIYers, Operation Homebrew will demonstrate how to make mozzarella.

Journey tribute band Departure will headline the entertainment, which will begin with opening bands starting at 8 p.m. Replicating the look, sound, and feel of the original 80s rock super group, Departure plays all the hit songs that everyone knows and loves. The readers of Gwinnett Magazine voted Departure “Best Local Entertainer” for 2011, 2012 and 2014.

Suwanee’s Big Cheesy took home the top prize in the ‘Best New Event Category,’ as well as a bronze award for ‘Best T-Shirt’ at the prestigious Kaleidoscope Awards from the Southeast Festivals and Events Association’s Annual Conference in Charleston, SC on January 26. Top festivals and events throughout the southeast were recognized for their outstanding contribution to the events industry.
