The refugee process begins with a referral from UNHCR. The U.N.’s refugee agency is responsible for registering some 15 million asylum seekers around the world, and providing aid and assistance until they are resettled abroad or (more likely) returned home once conditions ease. They have so far helped register 4,289,792 Syrian refugees and are $2 billion short of their funding requirements. A few hundred dollars may not look like much in the grand scheme, but for every $1000 helps resettle 1 refugee. So we can at least help do our part!
