Towering over the lower end of Barcelona’s beaches, this luxury hotel offers all you need for a great time that combines relaxation and fun. From stunning views across the sand and sea to restaurants, bars, pools and a spa, you may be hard-pressed to find a reason to leave during your stay. This striking contemporary hotel sits at the most southerly point of Barcelona’s some 4 kilometres of beach. Thanks to its appearance (which could also be said to resemble three-quarters of a silver lemon slice), the W Hotel is known locally as ‘La Vela’, or ‘The Sail’, and it’s a fitting nickname for this five-star accommodation that offers stunning views of both the city skyline and the Mediterranean horizon. This is a place where the details count, and there are numerous different services to experience; indeed, far too many to list here. We’re talking two pools, two restaurants, four bars (including one on the 26th floor and two in the lobby); private cocktail classes, guest DJs, exclusive poolside cabins. There’s even a range of Ricardo Cavolo limited edition sneakers, for goodness sake! The whole vibe is luxury glam in a place set apart from the crowds and stresses of the city centre, so if you want a break surrounded by beautiful people where your every desire can be catered to right there, this is the hotel for you. Location: Its beachfront position is clearly one of the W’s big selling points (viz. the positioning of beds for contemplating the views), and it's close to beach...

This sleek boutique hotel has a cool European vibe, a splendid rooftop terrace and a great location at the heart of the city.  Although this is a larger-scale boutique hotel (with 91 rooms), the cool, indie vibes are strong there. From the designer furniture to the promotion of slow food and the plant-lined rooftop terrace hosting DJs and aperitif sessions, the Pulitzer is hip with a capital H. The bedrooms are light and have a cosy European loft vibe, with fittings made from natural materials and elements in bright colours to keep things interesting. Freebies in all the rooms include WiFi, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and bottled water, while additional services include personal yoga sessions, in-room massages, and access to the nearby Holmes Place gym and pool. The Greenhouse Restaurant is bright, and decorated with wooden furniture and large plants; its innovative, appealing dishes are made using local, seasonal produce. At lunchtime there’s a good value set menu, while in the evening you can choose between á la carte and a tasting menu. If you’re in the mood for a drink, either head to the Lobby Bar or to the rooftop Pulitzer Terrace; both offer drinks, snacks and great music. Location: Cunningly located on a small street that gives onto Plaça Catalunya, at the Pulitzer you can enjoy the buzz of being in the city centre but slip away from the serious crowds to get to the hotel. It’s easy to walk to many of Barcelona’s sights and while you’ll find a lot of...

Hotel Peninsular stands out as one of the most centrally located hotels in Barcelona. Just a one-minute walk from La Rambla, it’s perfect for travellers who want to make the most of their time and avoid long journeys on public transport. Why stay at Hotel Peninsular? The building is also notable for its striking Modernist architecture. Its central courtyard, with three storeys of open galleries and balconies, has the feel of a neoclassical convent cloister. In fact, today’s hotel rooms were once the monks’ cells of an Augustinian convent. Some original features remain, including a hidden underground passageway—likely used during periods of unrest – that once connected the nearby Church of Sant Agustí (just behind the hotel) with the monks’ quarters. What does the Hotel Peninsular offer? The hotel is warm and welcoming, with free Wi-Fi available in designated areas. At its heart is a large, bright central patio surrounded by open balconies. The hotel’s Modernist-style bar and restaurant features elegant 19th-century décor and serves both a buffet breakfast and à la carte dishes. What are the rooms like at Hotel Peninsular? There are single, double, triple and family rooms, all with air conditioning, heating, a private bathroom and natural light. The average price is around €125 per person, per night, and includes breakfast. What’s the area like around Hotel Peninsular? The hotel is just a one-minute walk from La Rambla and 200 metres from Liceu metro station. It's right...

Its name might sound like that of a standard international hotel, but Grand Hotel Central is actually one of Barcelona’s most historic hotels – and one of the most characterful. Located right on Via Laietana – recently revamped and more pedestrian-friendly than ever – this grand 1920s building was once the tallest in the city, and still hides one of its best-kept secrets at the top: Casa Cambó. A Noucentista-style building, the hotel was renovated in 2024, retaining its elegance and classical feel but adding a practical, urban style full of personality. One of the city’s best – and least well-known – luxury hotels. Why stay at Grand Hotel Central? The building is steeped in history and heritage – in fact, it’s officially listed as a local cultural landmark. It’s part of Casa Cambó, a Noucentista residence that was once home to Francesc Cambó, founder of the Regionalist League and a major figure in early 20th-century Catalan and Spanish politics. Step into the lobby and you’ll feel like you’re in Chicago – Cambó commissioned the building from Adolf Florensa after visiting the Illinois capital, inspired by the emerging architecture after the Great Fire of 1871: rationalist, with rooftop gardens. The hotel offers all the features of a modern luxury stay with the rationalist flair of the Chicago School. Some luxury hotels feel tacky – this one is a work of art. What are the rooms like at Grand Hotel Central? The hotel has 147 rooms spread over eight floors in seven categories,...

An excellent example of how a place can help to breathe new life into a city neighbourhood, this hotel also offers comfort, style and sought-after extras like a rooftop terrace with a pool and panoramic views and a popular Sunday brunch. Owned by the Spanish Barceló chain, this hotel might have seemed a bit of a gamble when it was built in the late 2000s. The reason? Its location in the centre of El Raval neighbourhood, perhaps best described as a rough and ready area that tourists (and not a few locals) had previously tended to avoid. However, nowadays the barrio has undergone a notable but not totally suffocating gentrification process, and the hotel has much to commend it both in terms of local amenities and the Barceló Raval's own services. From your first sight of the building, a dark-coloured ellipsis with a metal mesh-like cover, to the moment you see the views of the city from its rooftop terrace, this is a place full of visual treats. Pops of strong colour, vibrant lighting, 360-degree panoramas of Barcelona… the list of memorable sensory experiences is long. There are three types of room, with the pricier ones being those with more floor space and better views, but they all share the big windows, technological touches and more than a nod to quality and comfort. One of the hotel’s biggest draws is its stunning rooftop, which includes a plunge pool and from where you feel as though you can see the whole city; while literally at the other end of the building, the...

Hotel Borneta by Miiro Hotels is one of the city’s newer hotels (opened in 2024), found in one of Barcelona’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, in a privileged location under the arcades of Passeig Picasso next to Ciutadella, one of Barcelona’s largest parks. And its credentials are pretty hard to beat. Even its name is a statement of intent and a tribute to the Born district, where it blends into the idea of urban, contemporary luxury that avoids extravagance and instead focuses on details – from the decoration of the rooms and common areas to the food at the restaurant, its terrace and its breakfasts. Why stay at Hotel Borneta? Borneta is the perfect base for discovering the city like a local – in fact it somehow manages to feel like staying at a friend’s house (the kind of friend you wish you had when visiting Barcelona). The building is visually stunning and characterised by classic local architecture. It was actually already a hotel before being fully remodelled in 2024, and it’s perfectly in tune with the neighbourhood’s cultural and artistic vibe. Borneta strikes a balance between comfort, location, service and good food – exactly what you want from an urban hotel with a bit of soul.  What are the rooms like at Hotel Borneta? Borneta has 92 rooms across half a dozen categories, including junior suites and one suite. They differ in size and layout, but all have street views and many include a small balcony overlooking the city. Beyond these differences – and exclusive...

A stunning 19th-century building on one of the world’s most famous streets houses this luxury hotel that offers elegance and style. This hotel is full of history. The building, constructed in 1881, was originally a private residence and later became the headquarters of the Compañía General de Tabacos de Filipinas; the hotel’s name is taken from the year that the Spanish colonies of Cuba and the Philippines became independent. It was renovated in 2005 to become a luxurious colonial-style accommodation and there’s a range of bedrooms on offer, all decorated in warm tones with wood features and furniture. Spacious marble bathrooms, a pillow menu and free tea are available in all rooms, while the larger ones offer extras including free newspapers, a Nespresso machine or a private terrace. Fine dining is on offer at the Restaurante H1898, which also offers views over La Rambla, while the Bar H1898 continues the colonial theme with brown leather armchairs, wood panelling and lots of light. Up on the rooftop 'La Isabela' terrace, in the summer you can linger by the outdoor pool, savour signature cocktails and tapas, and even breakfast in this ample space with amazing views of the city; during cooler weather it's available for lunch and dinner. Last but certainly not least, the Spa H1898 is for the exclusive use of guests and features a pool, steam bath, sauna, gym, massages and more. The H1898 really is the complete package. Location: Get to know one of Barcelona’s most...
