There’s a popular saying here, that goes Barcelona és bona si la bossa sona’ – roughly meaning you need money to enjoy this city. And yes, Barcelona ain’t cheap, but don’t believe all the hype: there are plenty of ways to have a holiday here for less. And every budget holiday needs to start right here – with cheap-as-possible accommodation.

But of course, cheap is selective. So to narrow it down, we’ve only included hotels in this list which come in at under €120 a night. For two people in central Barcelona, that isn’t a bad deal at all. And of course, the hostel dorm stays you’ll find on this list come in much, much cheaper than that – many of them starting at €25 or so. So whatever your vibe, you’ll find a great hotel in Barcelona. That’s a guarantee.

The best affordable hotels in Barcelona

  • Hotels
  • Ciutat Vella

This is one of our favourite hotels in Barcelona right now, point blank – and it just so happens to be very easy on the budget too. But it’s also incredibly central, right next to La Rambla. and near Raval too. The hotel also stands out for its Modernist architecture, centred around a bright inner courtyard with three open levels and balconies – we love the design at the on-site restaurant and bar too.

When is a hostel not a hostel? When it’s a Generator. At this hostel-hotel, you can still get a bed in a shared dorm for prices as low as €20 a night, if that’s what you want – but you can also get a private hotel room with a king-size bed, en-suite bathroom, private terrace and view of the Sagrada Família, at a cost (starting from €86) significantly below what you’d pay elsewhere in the same neighbourhood. Be warned, you might feel a little old here, especially as the lobby and reception area is shared between dorms and private rooms, but if you’re on a budget? It’s a solid choice.

Time Out tip: Check out Casa Amàlia nearby, for some of the best Catalan rice dishes in the city. We love the food here so much we even got them to open a second restaurant at Time Out Market Barcelona.
