At this year's National Restaurant Awards, two Birmingham-based restaurants can now proudly boast to be among the best 100 eateries in the whole country: Carters of Moseley and Purnell's.

The top 100 list, organised by Restaurants magazine, was determined by the votes of 150 industry experts from across the UK, including chefs, restauranteurs, food writers and critics. Each voter was given seven votes to distribute between the nominees, based on their personal restaurant experiences from the last 12 months.

Emerging as the UK's number one restaurant was the Spanish tapas bar Barrafina Adelaide Street, in London's Covent Garden. Perhaps unsurprisingly, London venues dominated the list, with half of the top 100 being located in the country's capital.

However, Carters of Moseley on Wake Green Road (which had already emerged victorious as the Good Food Guide's Restaurant of the Year) and the Michelin-starred Purnell's restaurant on Cornwall Street did the Midlands proud, positioned as number 87 and 88 in the country respectively.
