Dippy the Diplodocus has stood greeting visitors in the entrance hall of the Natural History Museum since 1979 - and the 22-meter skeleton cast has been a museum centrepiece for an impressive 109 years.

Earlier this year, the Museum announced that Dippy is losing his long-standing position in the Hintz Hall and will be replaced by a blue whale skeleton in 2017. It wasn't a popular decision, as more than 32,000 people to signed a petition insisting that he stay put.

While these people might not be happy, there's great news for the rest of the country – Dippy's going on tour!

Yes, even despite the mind-boggling logistics and costs associated with dismantling, transporting and reassembling a skeleton, the plan is for as many people possible to get up close with the huge dinosaur before it returns to its new location back at the Natural History Museum.

The museum is now calling on other museums and venues up and down the UK to register an interest in housing Dippy for at least four months. Needless to say, any prospective venue will need to have the space to fit the dino and a steady flow of eager visitors.

Dippy's tour will begin in 2018. In the meantime, venues can apply to host the skeleton at the Natural History Museum website
