Occasional shower aside, the city is hotting up and we're all looking for ways to cool down. While a cold beer in a pub garden might be the first port of call for many, a tempting ice cream runs a close second.

Sure, you could just grab a Nobbly Bobbly from the local newsagent's freezer, but why not treat yourself to something a bit more special?

Here are five great gelato specialists in Birmingham where you can enjoy a sundae or other chilly dessert while temperatures soar.

Paradice Gelateria

With a huge menu that includes milkshakes, smoothies, crepes and more, Paradice Gelateria in Harborne offers some deliciously inventive ways to cool off. These includes the Movie Night sundae (chocolate and vanilla gelato with popcorn, fudge cubes, whipped cream and toffee sauce) and the Ferrerolicious (vanilla and Ferrero Rocher gelato, topped with Nutella sauce, whipped cream and hazelnut).

There's even a small soft play area to distract your kids while you tuck in.

Scoops Dessert Lounge

Serving Moochie B's ice cream  which is unique to Birmingham  Scoops Dessert Lounge offers a range of flavours you're unlikely to find anywhere else.

These experimental 'gelato specialists' have created some weird and wonderful desserts, including Guinness Punch (sadly non-alcoholic), Yam and Plantain, Black Sesame Seed and Honey sorbet, as well as retro sweet flavours like Black Jacks and Fruit Salad.

Scoops Dessert Lounge, 252-254 Slade Road, Birmingham. Opening hours are 9.15pm-2am until July 17 for Ramadan.

Sweet Temptations Desserts

If you like a more traditional dessert, Sweet Temptations on Ladypool Road has got everything you need: sundaes, cakes, banana floats, crepes, waffles and even some savoury options, too.

One of the more unusual menu items that caught our eye is the Wake Up Call, a sundae with espresso and croquant (almond cookie) ice cream, with fresh strawberries and cream, drizzled with Belgian chocolate and garnished with ground coffee beans.

Sweet Temptations, 332 Ladypool Road, Birmingham. Opening hours 9pm-late until July 17.

Dolce Lounge

Dolce Lounge

Billing itself as a destination that evokes European cafe culture, the Dolce Lounge is aiming at the luxury end of the ice cream market. Along with coffees, waffles, pancakes and other delicious French-inspired desserts, it sells some truly indulgent sundaes.

One recent example of Dolche Lounge's extravagance includes the 24 Carat Gold sundae (above), which we imagine you won't find on the regular menu...

Dolche Lounge also do deliveries, if you want your order sent to your doorstep.

Dolche Lounge, 203 Corporation Street, Birmingham.

Mr Gelato

Mr Gelato

If that really is his name, then Mr Gelato in Selly Oak appear to be fulfilling a role he was born to do. We doubt it, but you can't complain when there are 36 different ice cream flavours on offer. This ranges from the more familiar fruit options to Bubblegum, Snickers, Kiwi, Cheesecake and more.

The menu also includes waffles, sundaes, crepes, milkshakes and more. Mr Gelato is also open seven days a week from 11am-11pm so you can get your fix well into the night.

Mr Gelato, 578 Bristol Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham.
