Mamma Mia! takes up residence at Birmingham theatre

The world is divided firmly into two camps – those who despair when they hear ABBA has been chosen as HMRC's hold music and those who don't mind waiting a little longer to speak to someone because they can't get enough of Sweden's finest pop export.

If you fall into the former camp, then click away right now. But if you're lucky enough to think that ABBA's swan song The Visitors is a much under-rated pop masterpiece – and it really is – then the following news will be very warmly received.

Judy Craymer's all-conquering Mamma Mia! stage show about family and friendship put to the test on a Greek island, told via Benny and Björn's magisterial pop songs, is leaving the West End to tour the UK for the first time next year. As well as dates in Bristol, Nottingham and Manchester, the cast, which has yet to be confirmed, will be rolling into the Birmingham Hippodrome from June 28-September 3 2016. Bang-a-boomerang, indeed.

Not everything that's mind-bogglingly popular is much cop, of course. Dan Brown. Leonardo DiCaprio. Avicii. But to recycle the title of that famous Elvis singles compilation, 54 million people can't be wrong about the Mamma Mia! stage show can they?

Tickets go on sale at 10am on Thursday 26 March (Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! etc), so maybe stick an I.O.U in that Mother's Day card on Sunday and be quick about it when the tickets are released. More information on the Mamma Mia! website.
