Night Owl bar brings northern soul back to Brum

For those of a certain age, it might be difficult to see what all the fuss is about, but Birmingham's latest bar, the Night Owl, has got quite a few button-down shirts and wide-legged trousers in a twist.

Claiming to be the first Northern Soul and Motown bar in the Midlands (this century, we assume), the Night Owl - named after a record by soul singer Bobby Paris - aims to recapture the community, energy and atmosphere of the insanely popular northern soul scene from the 1960s, '70s and '80s.

The Night Owl hopes to do this by staying faithful to northern soul and Motown traditions. Along with a wooden dance floor (which has been sprung to better absorb energetic dance moves) and an interior decked out with modern/vintage furniture, its Northern Soul evenings (taking place every Friday) will stick faithfully to playing only original vinyls. In fact, the DJ will display the label of the record that is currently spinning with a camera just in case you doubt it.

Reaching its peak popularity in the 1970s, nearly every major town in the North and Midlands once boasted a northern soul club. However, despite a resurgence in the 1980s, the scene had all but disappeared by the 1990s.

In recent years, northern soul has started to experience a significant revival, encouraged by radio DJs as well a number of movies, including 2010's 'Soulboy' and last year's BAFTA-nominated film 'Northern Soul'.

The launch of the Night Owl bar in Digbeth on July 17 has been so well received that tickets for its opening Northern Soul Allnighter event have already sold out.

Still, there will be plenty of opportunities to get your fix, with a range of regular nights on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, covering northern soul, Motown, R&B, ska, funk, reggae and more.

On Wednesdays, the Night Owl will also be holding dance classes to make sure you're limbered up for the weekend.
