Crufts, the annual battle of the bowows, released figures of all the dogs entered from Birmingham this year and the Beagle reigns superior. Seven of the sleek hunting hounds are competing for the place of top dog, no doubt sending shivers down the spines of the Chow Chow, Toy Poodle and Yorkshire Terrier, who all stand solo in their breeds.

Giving the Brummy Beagles a run for their money will be the small but popular Pugs, six of which are taking part, as well as four Bearded Collies. In total there are 66 cunning canines from Birmingham in the running and they only have one week left to prepare for the show, as Crufts kicks off next Thursday at the NEC with the toy and utility dogs, followed by the gundogs, then working and pastoral and finally finishing with the terrier and hound category, plus 'Best in Show'.

And the top ten Birmingham dogs are…

1. Beagle

2. Pug

3. Bearded Collie

4. Bernese Mountain Dog

5. Dalmatian

6. Griffon Bruxellois

7. Russian Black Terrier

8. Staffordshire Bull Terrier

9. Weimaraner

10. Borzoi
