Thai restaurant serving quality classics and enticing lesser-known options. The holy basil stir fry is a must-try dish

Sabai Sabai is a Thai restaurant with outposts in Moseley and Harborne. Both areas are hotspots for independent eateries, but Sabai Sabai stands out with its great quality Thai food.

The Moseley branch is in the lively Woodbridge Road, where it almost hides from view as a small restaurant of around 25 covers, wedged between a pub and a series of convenience shops. The Harborne branch opened much later as the brand expanded, occupying pride of place on a sweeping corner.

The menu is generous in its variety, excelling at all the familiar Thai staples such as chicken satay (£6.95), pad thai (£9.95) and green curry (£10.95). But for the more inquisitive, there are less trodden options such as sweetcorn cakes, jungle curry and holy basil stir fry, which is a definite must-have. The authenticity is obvious and the flavours irresistible.

Sabai Sabai is headed up by a husband and wife team with deep roots in hospitality and strong family connections to Thailand. The restaurant they’ve built feels exclusive without being stuffy, and exotic without being overly gimmicky. However, there is something of an adorable obsession with intricately carved vegetables – look out for them.
