A stone's throw from the Bell in Hand, this bar dates back (though not in its present form) to 1773. The spot on which it stands is 'the birthplace of American freedom', where the sons of liberty gathered over a few pints to plot the downfall of the British. A glass case on the wall contains some of the implements - muskets and so on - used to achieve that end. Still, this is a congenial place with live music, attentive staff, carpeted nooks and faded wallpaper.
